Wellforce is a different kind of health system. We bring together outstanding, value-driven providers who are setting a new standard for health care in Massachusetts. We believe patients should get the care they want when and where they want it.
Our community hospitals and academic medical center teams exchange ideas and craft solutions to help people fight the most serious illnesses, manage chronic diseases and live healthier lives. All our hospitals and caregivers share a passion for delivering the highest quality of care at a lower cost Elected officials and health care experts often cite us as leaders in delivering on the promise of high quality, lower cost health care.
Wellforce - with four community hospital campuses, an academic medical center, a children’s hospital and nearly 3,000 physicians – reaches from Cape Cod to the New Hampshire border, allowing us to bring care to your community. We don’t believe everyone should have to come to Boston for the best care; we bring Boston-level expertise to you. Wellforce’s CEO Norm Deschene has successfully led community health care systems for more than three decades. He and his team understand how to make exceptional care accessible.
Wellforce was formed in 2014 by Circle Health (including Lowell General Hospital) and Tufts Medical Center as well as the physicians of New England Quality Care Alliance and the Lowell General Physician Hospital Organization. On January 1, 2017, Hallmark Health, including Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Hallmark Physician Hospital Organization, joined Wellforce as an equal, founding member.
Wellforce was created to provide Massachusetts hospitals and physicians with a new option for collaboration. Historically, academic medical centers had “taken over” community hospitals, but Wellforce brings together the strengths of academic medicine and community care in a model that respects both equally.
Delivering on the Wellforce Promise
Wellforce clinicians are changing the way health care is delivered in Massachusetts today.
Tufts Medical Center, Floating Hospital for Children, Circle Health and Lowell General Hospital have partnered to bring academic specialists closer to patients in the Merrimack Valley. Tufts MC physicians care for patients in the Pediatric Unit, Special Care Nursery and Intensive Care at Lowell General Hospital. Tufts MC subspecialists in cardiovascular disease, nephrology, pediatric gastroenterology, and pediatric neurology - just to name a few - see patients for outpatient appointments in locations like North Chelmsford, Lowell and Westford.
With these services close by, residents don’t have to drive to Boston for an appointment or be away from friends and family when they are ill. Lowell General ICUs are now caring for almost 300 more patients since partnering with Tufts Medical Center. Last year, 322 newborns were cared for in the Lowell General Hospital Special Care Nursery in partnership with Floating Hospital for Children specialists, and close to 1,000 children remained close to parents and siblings because they were admitted to the pediatric unit at Lowell General. When an academic medical center is needed, a seamless transfer can be made to Tufts MC.
With Hallmark Health joining Wellforce in 2017, our professionals are working collaboratively to build on the excellent care provided by Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Together, we will provide greater access and offer new services in the community.
Wellforce is also delivering on its promise to provide care more efficiently. Through synergies and economies of scale, Wellforce has saved more than $5 million for our members in just two years.
