Wellforce is a different kind of health system. We bring together outstanding, value-driven providers who are setting a new standard for health care in Massachusetts. We believe patients should get the care they want when and where they want it.
Our members exchange ideas and craft solutions to help people fight the most serious illnesses, manage chronic diseases and live healthier lives. Our caregivers share a passion for delivering the highest quality of care at a lowest cost Elected officials and health care experts often cite us as leaders in delivering on the promise of highest quality, lowest cost health care.
Wellforce - with four community hospital campuses, an academic medical center, a children’s hospital, home care and nearly 3,000 physicians – reaches from Cape Cod to the New Hampshire border, allowing us to bring care to your community. We don’t believe everyone should have to come to Boston for the best care; we bring Boston-level expertise to you. Wellforce’s CEO Norm Deschene has successfully led community health care systems for more than three decades. He and his team understand how to make exceptional care accessible.
Wellforce was formed in 2014 by Circle Health (including Lowell General Hospital) and Tufts Medical Center as well as the physicians of New England Quality Care Alliance and the Lowell General Physician Hospital Organization. On January 1, 2017, MelroseWakefield Healthcare, previously Hallmark Health, including MelroseWakefield Hospital, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Hallmark Physician Hospital Organization, joined Wellforce as an equal, founding member.
October 1, 2018, Home Health Foundation joined Wellforce.
Wellforce was created to provide Massachusetts hospitals and physicians with a new option for collaboration. Historically, academic medical centers had “taken over” community hospitals, but Wellforce brings together the strengths of academic medicine and community care in a model that respects both equally.
Delivering on the Wellforce Promise
Wellforce was founded on the principle that care should be delivered when and where the patient needs it. We agreed we would not be constrained by the historical market philosophy perpetuated by our competitors that Boston has to be the hub of care.
Through a partnership between Wellforce members, Tufts Medical Center and MelroseWakefield Healthcare, north suburban area residents now have access to comprehensive spine and cranial care. Two Tufts Medical Center neurosurgeons provide consultations and surgeries at MelroseWakefield Hospital. The programs are attracting new patients into the MWHC system, increasing case mix, lowering costs and maximizing convenience for patients.
With these services close by, residents don’t have to drive to Boston for an appointment or be away from friends and family when they are ill. Lowell General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center began
an ICU partnership more than five years ago. The results have included a higher case mix at Lowell General, greater value and, most importantly, more patients have stayed close to home and family. Now the intensivist team at Tufts Medical Center will work with MelroseWakefield Hospital staff to recreate the results in Melrose.
With a 100-member multi-disciplinary team of CardioVascular experts calling themselves the Wellforce-wide Initiative in CardioVascular Care, or WINCC, was charged with creating an enhanced and consistent cardiovascular experience across Wellforce. The group selected Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation as the first projects, creating standardized patient education materials and a nurse navigator program.
In just a few short years, Wellforce has proven complex, high-quality care in the community is not just a possibility but a reality.
